Optometrists and ophthalmologists use a wide variety of techniques to examine your eyes during a comprehensive eye exam. These tests range from the simple, like having you read an eye chart, to the complex, such as using a high-powered lens to visualize the tiny structures inside of your eyes. A comprehensive eye exam can take an hour or more, depending on your doctor and the number and complexity of tests required to fully evaluate you. Here is what you can expect during a comprehensive eye exam:

Color Blindness Test

A color vision screening is often performed early in the eye exam process. In addition to detecting color blindness, this can also alert your doctor to eye health defects that affect your color vision.

Cover Test

During this test, your doctor will cover each of your eyes individually and ask you to look across the room at a far object, then closer at a near object. By having you fixate on these two separate targets with each eye, your doctor can see weather the eye has to move in order to “pick up” the target. If it does have to move, this could indicate strabismus or a subtler binocular vision problem that could cause eye strain or “lazy eye.”

Ocular Motility (Eye Movement) Testing

These tests show how well your eyes can follow a moving target or move rapidly between two targets. The more common test is of smooth eye movement, or “pursuits.” Your doctor will have you hold your head still and follow a small light or other object from side to side using only your eyes. Less frequently, doctors may test quick eye movements, or “saccades,” by having you move your eyes back and forth between two objects placed with some space in between. Potential problems with eye movements are problems with eye strain, reading ability, and sports vision.

Stereopsis (Depth Perception) Test

The term “stereopsis” describes the way your two eyes team up to create depth perception as well as a 3-D view of the world. In one commonly used stereopsis test, you are asked to wear 3-D glasses while looking at a booklet of test patterns. The booklet will have images of shapes that appear closer and farther away, and you will be asked to identify which shape appears to be closest to you. If you can identify the correct shape, it means you have excellent eye-teaming ability.


This test is performed early in the exam to get an approximation of your eyeglass prescription. Your doctor will ask you to stare at the big “E” at the top of an eye chart. As you stare at the “E,” your eye doctor will shine a light at your eye and flip lenses in a machine in front of your eyes. This test estimates which lens powers will best correct your distance vision.


While looking at an eye chart on the wall, the doctor presents you with various lenses to look through and asks which offers you the clearest view of the letters on the chart. This is how the doctor determines your exact eyeglass prescription.

Slit Lamp Exam

A slit lamp is a binocular microscope (or “biomicroscope”) that your eye doctor uses to examine the structures of your eye under high magnification. During the slit lamp exam, you will be asked to place your forehead and chin on rests on the front of the instrument. Your doctor will begin by examining the structures of the front of your eyes, including your eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva, iris, and lens.

With the help of a hand-held lens, your doctor may also use the slit lamp to examine structures located farther back in the eye, such as the retina and optic nerve.

A wide range of eye conditions and diseases can be detected with the slit lamp exam, including cataracts, macular degeneration, corneal ulcers and diabetic retinopathy.

Glaucoma Test

This is the “puff of air” test, technically known as non-contact tonometry, or NCT. Based on your eye’s resistance to the puff of air, the machine calculates your intraocular pressure (IOP). If you have high eye pressure, you may be at risk for or have glaucoma.

Pupil Dilation

Your doctor may use dilating eye drops to obtain a better view of your eyes’ internal structures. This allows for the most thorough evaluation of eye health. Make sure to bring sunglasses for the ride home, because you will be more sensitive to sunlight when your pupils are dilated.

Visual Field Test

In some cases, your doctor might check for blind spots, or scotomas, in your peripheral vision. These can be caused by eye diseases such as glaucoma, or brain damage from stroke or brain tumors.

Work Those Muscles

Eye exercises are designed to strengthen your eye muscles, help you focus and stimulate your brain’s vision center. As with any muscle, it only gets stronger if you work it out! As you continue to do these exercises, you will begin to develop more control over your eye muscles which can improve your vision.

Exercises are unique to each individual and can also be based on age and specific eye problems. These are some very simple techniques you can do to exercise your eyes at home:

• Change your focus from an object that is close to you to an object further away and back again.

• Cover one eye and focus on different objects.

• Concentrate on looking at a solitary object.

• Follow a pattern to build your eye muscles.

Additional Exercises

There are many other exercises you can try at home to help strengthen your eyes and combat eye strain. Try one or a combination of all six to develop a routine that can help you work those eye muscles.

1. Try rubbing your palms together to generate some heat and then putting your hands over your closed eyes and applying some gentle pressure. Allow the heat from your palms to warm your eyes and relax them for a few minutes.

2. Computer-induced eye strain contributes to a lack of blinking which can dry out your eyes. A simple exercise goal is to try and blink once every four seconds to keep your eyes lubricated. Sounds simple but when you are engrossed in computer tasks, it is easy to forget.

3. When you feel your shoulders tightening up and your neck starting to ache, you probably start some relaxing neck rolls to loosen up. You can do the same for your eyes. Close your eyes and roll them in circles. This will help keep your eyes well lubricated and can ease the strain.

4. In addition to the exercise mentioned above where you adjust your focus from an object near and then one far, you can also practice visual scanning. Focus on one or two items to start and then take in everything in the room around you, even looking out the window if you can. This allows your eyes to be in a constant state of motion.

5. It’s also important to take a break from that computer screen and focus on something, anything, else for a few seconds or better yet, a few minutes if you can. You should try to do this at least once an hour.

6. Another exercise to help avoid strain and strengthen those eye muscles is to practice the art of glancing. Sit down and close your eyes. Glance as far up as you possibly can and hold your head there for a moment. After a few seconds, look down and repeat this process for about 30 seconds. Now, with your eyes still closed, do this again only look to the right and then to the left. Continue to repeat for about 30 seconds.

Each of these exercises is designed to help keep your eyes lubricated and those muscles working.

The Dangers of Neglecting Our Eyes

As age begins to creep up on all of us, the inevitable aches and pains start to become more prevalent. Our joints don’t work quite as well as they used to. Dry Eyes

Dry eyes are a common problem and happen when our tear glands can’t produce enough tears or produce low-quality tears. Symptoms include itching, burning and red eyes. If left untreated, vision loss can occur. Common treatments include using a humidifier and special eye drops that simulate tears.


The opposite of dry eyes is tearing, when your eyes produce too many tears. This can happen if you are sensitive to light, wind or temperature changes. Common treatment includes wearing sunglasses to shield your eyes. If not addressed properly, you can develop an eye infection or you may suffer from a more serious issue like a blocked tear duct. Many older adults suffer from cataracts or cloudy areas that cover all or part of the lens of the eye. Cataracts form slowly, without pain, redness or tearing and will begin to block the lens of your eye making it difficult to see. Some cataracts stay small but those that don’t require surgery to remove.


Glaucoma happens when there is too much pressure inside your eye. If not caught early, permanent vision loss and blindness can occur. Symptoms and pain may not be present until it is too late so make sure you get your eyes regularly checked. Treatment includes prescription eye drops, other medication or surgery.

Other Disorders and Symptoms

Retinal disorders such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vessel occlusions and a detached retina all affect the thin lining on the back of the eye. Conjunctivitis is common and happens when the tissue covering your eye gets inflamed. This inflammation can come from an infection, allergies or exposure to chemicals or other irritants. Symptoms include burning, itching, red eyes or the feeling that something is actually in your eye.

Corneal disease is much more serious and can happen from disease, infection, an injury or exposure to toxins. The cornea is what allows the eye to focus light. As we get older, drooping or twitching eye lids can cause all kinds of problems. If you eyelid isn’t functioning the way it should, it can’t properly protect your eyes, spread out your tears and limit the amount of light.
