Is IntraLase Better Than Lasik?

Advanced Eye Medical and the staff of Dr. Ghosheh always have a passion for providing the best in treatments and procedures. One of the most popular procedures includes laser eye surgery for the improvement of vision. These highly successful treatments are sought after due to being easy, non-invasive, and effective. But what is iLASIK?

Now, Advanced Eye Medical offers iLASIK, also known as IntraLase, which is an advanced version of the traditional LASIK procedure. While both treatments are offered, patients often tend to prefer one or the other. Let’s explore these options together to determine whether one is better than the other, or what options may feel best for your needs.

What Is IntraLase?

iLASIK is a new, specialized type of LASIK eye surgery that does not require a blade to create the corneal flap needed to correct vision. Many eye doctors may recommend this particular type of LASIK surgery if you are a first-time LASIK patient, or if you may need multiple surgeries of the same nature down the line.

IntraLase uses laser technology to create the flap, making it completely non-invasive. The flap is therefore and more precise than a human hand could make.

Pros:

  • People who may have thin corneas and are unable to get traditional LASIK can now invest in a LASIK option
  • It has become a safer procedure than traditional LASIK in most cases

Cons:

  • Patients may be left with temporary photophobia (light sensitivity)
  • The laser can change cell growth and slightly change the appearance of the cornea

According to the QualSight program, these risks are very minimal and there have been almost zero reported cases of lasting complications or side effects.

What is LASIK?

Traditional LASIK is a tried and true procedure that uses a blade by hand to make a flap in the cornea for vision correction. At Advanced Eye Medical, we have gone completely blade-free, offering advanced LASIK or iLASIK options to all of our patients.

Some candidates may be fit for traditional LASIK who aren’t able to get an iLASIK treatment or vice versa. But generally, those who are in good health and have the vision requirements listed on our website are able to invest in any of the LASIK procedures we have available.

Most iLASIK patients:

  • Are over 21 years of age
  • Have had a steady prescription for at least 1 year or more
  • Do not have eye diseases or complications
  • Have good general health, as any kind of surgery would require

Vision correction is very important to us. Your procedure should be correct the first time. We fully believe in the power and success rate of iLASIK, so much so that even NASA and the US military uses it for their astronauts and service people!
