A cataract is a clouding of the clear lens of the eye. Once the lens becomes opaque, it interferes with the passage of light into the eye resulting in impaired vision.
Most cataracts are caused by the eye’s natural aging process. Other causes of cataracts include radiation, diabetes, systemic diseases, injury to the eye or certain medications.
The amount of cloudiness within the lens may vary, but common visual impairments include:
- Blurred vision
- Glare and reduced vision in bright light
- Halos around lights
- Double vision in one eye
- Frequent eyeglass prescription changes
- Poor night vision
- Need for brighter light when reading
CUSTOM CATARACT SURGERY
Cataract removal is one of the safest and most effective surgical procedures. Dr.Ghosheh utilizes the latest technology to customize each surgery. The operation entails making a tiny incision in the eye and inserting an instrument about the size of a pen tip to break up and remove the cloudy lens. Once the cloudy lens is removed, an intraocular lens or “IOL” is inserted through the same tiny incision and set into its permanent position
Most people are surprised to find out just how easy and pain-free cataract surgery is. It usually takes 20-30 minutes or less and most patients are back to their normal activities the very next day. Once a cataract is removed, it cannot return
NEW GENERATION INTRAOCULAR LENSES (IOLs)
An intraocular lens is an artificial lens that’s implanted during cataract surgery. The good news is that you’ve encountered cataracts at a time when intraocular lens technology has taken great leaps. There are now several options to choose from:
MONOFOCAL LENS
These lenses have one point of focus and can usually give you clear distance vision. While distance vision is improved, most patients still need to wear glasses for certain tasks, sucha as reading or working on a computer.
MULTIFOCAL LENS
The ReSTOR lens is specially designed to replace cataracts andcorrect presbyopia (loss of reading) at the same time—that means that nearly every patient after cataract surgery is free from glasses! The goal of these lenses is to give you a full range of clear vision, near to far, and everywhere in between.
ACCOMODATING LENS
The Crystalens, is a single-focus accommodating intraocular lens. It was developed to address the loss of intermediate and near focusing ability. Crystalens is a cataract replacement lens that works naturally with your eyes' muscles to give you the quality of vision you enjoyed when you were younger.
The revolutionary design element that makes Crystalens the state-of-the-art replacement lens are "hinges" which are designed to allow the lens to move, or accommodate to focus on objects near, far and all distances in-between seamlessly.
ASTIGMATISM-CORRECTING LENS
For patient’s with significant corneal astigmatism, the Toric IOL provides a new option. Similar to monofocal lenses, these lenses usually give patients quality distance vision with less dependence on glasses. Most patients will still need to wear glasses for tasks such as reading or working on a computer. |
